Since 1996, DMJM has worked with Christopher Newport University (CNU) to define the character and image of its campus through the development of a comprehensive master plan and subsequent design of multiple facilities. The plan encompasses land use, urban design, academic and support facilities, housing, recreation and open space, and transportation and parking elements. It reorganizes existing open space to create a series of quadrangles and develops a new ceremonial entrance to the campus.
DMJM has provided full architectural and engineering design services for the York River residence halls —the first project of the master plan—which provide CNU with a total of 528 new student beds. The project evolved as two identical L-shaped buildings that create east and west residence halls, for a combined construction area of 150,000 square feet. Each building is composed of two wings, identical in size and massing, perpendicular to one another, and linked by the Commons. The Commons is a single-story structure housing a large open space for the lobby and lounge within an octagonal volume. Future projects will include the renovation and expansion of the Captain John Smith Library, two additional residence halls, and a new student center. |
